The best way to create a family website these days is to actually just use Facebook.com or if you really want a separate website I would personally go with a free blog at www.wordpress.com. With Facebook you can share photos and post your daily activities on your wall and follow other family members. You can keep the connections between family members only and control who sees what information. People in your "friends" list will be able to share their own photos and stories too.

If you really still want to create a family website you might also look into using something like Weebly.com which offers free hosting without ads.

When thinking about creating a website it is best to start planning a site before you actually start it and start thinking about why you really want a website. Think about what information you would like to share. When you get an answer to those things it will help you decide which hosting system or website system to use.

Some of the things you might want to use a family website for is to share info on the history of the family and share resources for researching the family tree. You might also want to use it to organize family reunions. You can find free software to use to organize people and invite people.

There are companies out there offering free family website systems that I don't really know much about. They might be easier to use than using Wordpress because there is a small learning curve to use it. It will depend on how much time you have and what you want it to look like.

Overall, I still think your best bet is just using Facebook. It will let you email everyone in the family at once and you can also create events and get people to reply. I guess the major downfall would be that older people in the family might not be so open to it, but heck my 80 year old mother got a Facebook page to keep in contact with my nephew so it can be done!
